Basic Information

Akihasan Hongu Akiba Jinja is located in Tenryu Ward, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, near the summit of Mt. Akiba, at an elevation of 866 meters. This jinja serves as the sōhonmiya (head shrine) for approximately 400 Akiba Jinja shrines across Japan and has long been revered as the “kami of fire prevention,” drawing immense faith since ancient times.

The enshrined kami is Hino Kagutsuchi no Ōkami, the kami who presides over fire. The shrine complex consists of two parts: the Kamisha (Upper Shrine) on the mountaintop and the Shimosha (Lower Shrine) at the foot of the mountain. The panoramic view from the Kamisha, in particular, is a magnificent sight truly befitting its nickname, “Shrine in the Sky.”

The Golden “Torii of Happiness” and the Mystery of the Superb View

Upon stepping into the Kamisha, visitors are immediately captivated by the dazzling “Golden Torii.” Its official name is the “Torii of Happiness” (Shiawase no Torii), and it was erected with prayers for the happiness of all people.
