Yatsuki Tsutsukowake jinja is located in Tanagura Town, Fukushima Prefecture. Revered as “Oshu Ichinomiya” (the premier shrine of Oshu Province) since ancient times, it is a prestigious Myojin Taisha (grand shrine listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho, a historical record of shrines). However, this shrine holds numerous legends and mysteries that fascinate history buffs and those who love a good puzzle.

Basic Information
Location: 224 Omiya, Yatsuki, Tanagura Town, Higashishirakawa District, Fukushima Prefecture
Deities enshrined: Ajisukitakahikone no Mikoto, Yamato Takeru no Mikoto
Main festival: Yatsuki Tsutsukowake Jinja’s Otaue (a ritual rice-planting ceremony, designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property)

The Origin of the Name “Yatsuki” and the Legend of Yamato Takeru’s “Eight Arrows”
The place name “Yatsuki,” which is part of this jinja’s name, carries a heroic legend related to Yamato Takeru.

During the reign of Emperor Keiko, Yamato Takeru embarked on his eastern expedition and confronted “eight Tsuchigumo” (an unsubmissive tribe) who ruled this land. They were incredibly powerful, and the imperial army faced great difficulty. Yamato Takeru prayed to the gods of heaven and earth, then shot eight “Tsuki no Ya” (arrows made from the “tsuki” tree).

It is said that the arrows flew with a sound like thunder, piercing all eight rebels. The spot where the arrows landed was called “Yatsuki” (meaning “arrow landing”), and later the kanji characters for “Yatsuki” (八槻, meaning “eight tsuki trees”) were adopted. Even more mysteriously, there is a legend that the arrows, after striking the ground, sprouted and grew into enormous tsuki (keyaki or zelkova) trees.

The Mystery of “Two Ichinomiya”
Interestingly, there is another jinja in Tanagura Town that bears the name “Tsutsukowake Jinja”: Baba Tsutsukowake Jinja.

Both claim to be the “Ichinomiya of Mutsu Province” (the premier shrine of Mutsu Province) and stand only about a 10-minute drive from each other. Why are there two Ichinomiya in the same town?

One theory suggests that they were originally a single jinja that later split, while another posits that the central location shifted over time. However, the exact reason remains shrouded in mystery.

Furthermore, the three shrines along the Kuji River — Baba (Kami no Miya, “Upper Shrine”), Yatsuki (Naka no Miya, “Middle Shrine”), and Chikatsu (Shimo no Miya, “Lower Shrine”) — are collectively known as “Chikatsu Sanja.” The formation of sacred areas along the river’s flow is a unique form of worship in this region.

A “Living History” Spanning Over 500 Years: The Yatsuki Family Residence
Right beside the jinja stands the “Yatsuki Family Residence,” the home of the Yatsuki clan who have served as chief priests (guji) for generations. This incredibly valuable structure dates back over 500 years to the late Muromachi period, preserving its architectural style to this day (designated an Important Cultural Property of Fukushima Prefecture).

It once served as a base for Kumano Shugen (Shugendo mountain asceticism), and traces within the house show that spears were kept ready in case of an attack, hinting at its history as more than just a residence – a fortress. The chief priest’s family continues to protect it today, and its gardens and dignified presence convey the profound legacy of a clan stretching back to mythological times.

The Yoshuku Ritual: Yatsuki’s Otaue
Held annually on the lunar New Year, the “Otaue Matsuri” is a “yoshuku” (pre-harvest prayer) ceremony performed to pray for a bountiful harvest in the coming year.

This ritual reenacts the rice-planting process, with the main hall (haiden) serving as a paddy field, complete with wooden oxen pulled around and farming tools made of mochi (rice cakes). Despite the humorous interactions, it embodies an ancient and elegant tradition. Designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, it is known as a symbolic event that heralds the arrival of spring amidst Tohoku’s harsh winters.

Yatsuki Tsutsukowake Jinja is far more than just a “power spot”; it is a place where one can feel an overwhelming “depth of history.” Why not take a stroll through its tranquil grounds, pondering the fate of the arrows shot by Yamato Takeru?

Oosugi jinja (Oosugi Shrine), located in Inashiki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is a distinguished jinja often called “Ibaraki’s Nikko Toshogu Shrine” due to its overwhelming splendor. However, the charm of this jinja goes beyond its visual beauty. It has been affectionately known as “Anba-sama” since ancient times, harboring many mysterious legends and surprising anecdotes that appeal to modern fans.

Basic Information

Location: 958 Awa, Inashiki City, Ibaraki Prefecture
Enshrined kami: Oomononushikushimikatama-no-mikoto
Main Divine Blessings: Yume Musubi (connecting with and fulfilling dreams), warding off evil, family safety, traffic safety, certain victory in horse racing.

Legends and Mystery: The Giant Cedar and the Shadow of Tengu

Oosugi jinja takes its name from a gigantic sacred cedar tree (goshinboku) that once towered over the shrine grounds. This cedar was so immense that it was affectionately called “Anba-sama” and revered since ancient times as a guardian kami for maritime travel and fishing.

The most famous legend associated with this area is the “Tengu Legend.” During the Heian period, it is said that Hitachibo Kaison (also known as a retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitsune), who visited this land, performed numerous miracles through the power of Oosugi jinja’s sacred tree. Kaison is believed to have later transformed into a Tengu and continues to protect this land even today. Within the shrine grounds stand impressive statues of “Hanataka Tengu” (the long-nosed Tengu, also known as Negai Tengu, or “Wish-granting Tengu”) and “Karasu Tengu” (the crow-billed Tengu, also known as Kanai Tengu, or “Fulfilling Tengu”). These Tengu are said to act as intermediaries, delivering the wishes of worshippers to the kami.

Japan’s Only “Yume Musubi” Daimyojin

Oosugi jinja is the only shrine in Japan that promotes “Yume Musubi,” or the “tying of dreams.” This is not merely about having wishes granted, but about connecting your personal dreams and goals with the kami, who then guide you towards their realization.

Particularly unique are the “Masayume Omamori” (amulets for true dreams) and a specific method of worship that provides concrete steps for achieving your dreams. It involves reconfirming your aspirations and taking a decisive step forward with the assistance of the Tengu’s power. As a power spot brimming with such positive energy, Oosugi jinja continuously draws worshippers from across the country.

Inside Story: A Pilgrimage Site for Horse Racing Fans and “Uma Musume” Enthusiasts

Oosugi jinja holds a strong connection to competitive endeavors, particularly those involving horses. Kachiuma jinja, a sub-shrine within the grounds, is renowned for attracting many horse racing officials and jockeys who come to pray for certain victory, partly due to its proximity to the JRA (Japan Racing Association) Miho Training Center.

In recent years, it is also common to see fans of the popular content “Uma Musume Pretty Derby” visiting as part of a pilgrimage, seeking the divine blessing of “Kachiuma” (victorious horses). Ema (votive tablets) are offered, wishing for the victory of their favorite characters, success in gacha draws, and even for the peaceful post-retirement lives of racehorses. This creates a fascinating sight where traditional faith and modern subculture blend seamlessly.

Architectural Beauty and the “Mouse Gate”

The vividly colored carvings adorning the main shrine building are simply magnificent. However, be sure to pay special attention to the “Nezumi no Mon” (Mouse Gate), which is a romon (two-storied gate). It features intricate mouse carvings, deriving from the myth of a mouse that helped Okuninushi-no-mikoto (who is identified with Oomononushi-no-mikoto). There is a tradition that passing through this gate brings good fortune in money and blessings of children, making it a popular, hidden photo spot.

Tips for Visiting

When you visit Oosugi jinja, start by expressing your “dreams” at the lavish main shrine building. Afterwards, earnestly pray before the Tengu statues for their support in achieving those dreams. It is also said that the best route to maximize your luck is to purify your spirit by performing “kawarake-wari” (plate breaking to ward off evil) within the grounds, and then proceed to Kachiuma jinja.

Oosugi jinja is a place where history, legends, and modern enthusiasm intersect. Step inside, and you are sure to have a wondrous experience that makes you forget your daily routine, enveloped by its overwhelming colors and the mystical presence of the Tengu.

Kanda Jinja, commonly known as Kanda Myojin, is located in Sotokanda, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. With a history spanning nearly 1300 years, this jinja is known as the protector of Edo (old Tokyo) and famously where Tokugawa Ieyasu prayed for victory in the decisive Battle of Sekigahara. Today, it sits at the border of Tokyo’s business district and Akihabara, the electric town, making it a rare spot where tradition and modern culture merge, bustling daily with many worshippers.

Basic Information
Official Name: Kanda Jinja
Enshrined kami:
Ichinomiya: Onamuchi-no-mikoto (also known as Daikoku-sama), the kami of matchmaking and good relationships.
Ninomiya: Sukunahikona-no-mikoto (also known as Ebisu-sama), the kami of business prosperity.
Sannomiya: Taira-no-Masakado-no-mikoto (also known as Masakado-sama), the kami for protection against disaster and misfortune.
Location: 2-16-2 Sotokanda, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo

Legends and Mysteries: From Feared Vengeful Spirit to Guardian Deity
Central to the story of Kanda Myojin is the presence of Taira-no-Masakado-no-mikoto, enshrined in Sannomiya. In the Heian period, Masakado led a rebellion in the Kanto region, declaring himself ‘New Emperor.’ He is famously associated with the legend of the ‘Kubi-zuka’ (mound of his head), which claims his severed head flew from Kyoto all the way to Edo (near present-day Otemachi, Chiyoda Ward) after his death.

Once feared as one of Japan’s three great vengeful spirits, Masakado is now revered at Kanda Myojin as a powerful guardian deity protecting the city of Edo. However, mysteries surrounding him continue to be told to this day.

1. The ‘Taboo’ with Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple

Because prayers were offered at Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple in Chiba Prefecture to suppress Masakado, those who revere him and the parishioners (ujiko) of Kanda Myojin still maintain the custom of ‘not visiting Naritasan.’ It is believed that if one visits Naritasan, the divine protection of Lord Masakado will be lost.

2. ‘Masakado’s Curse’ Continuing into Modern Times

Around Masakado’s Kubi-zuka in Otemachi, after World War II, when the Ministry of Finance (then) attempted to construct a temporary office, and during subsequent building constructions in the vicinity, suspicious incidents occurred one after another, including the deaths of involved personnel. These events were feared as ‘Masakado’s Curse,’ and even today, the Kubi-zuka remains quietly, yet strictly, protected amidst the cluster of modern buildings. Kanda Myojin has deep ties to this Kubi-zuka, and even modern business people visit the shrine with reverence, believing that ‘disrespect will hinder their work.’

Behind the Scenes: IT Deity and ‘Kachi-mamori’ Victory Charms
Reflecting its location in Akihabara, Kanda Myojin is also famous for offering ‘IT protection’ amulets (omamori). These amulets, designed like circuit boards, are immensely popular among system engineers and IT company executives.

Furthermore, because Tokugawa Ieyasu achieved victory in the Battle of Sekigahara on the day of Kanda Myojin’s festival, the shrine is also known as a kami of good fortune in competitions. Many students preparing for exams and athletes visit in search of a ‘kachi-mamori’ (victory charm) for crucial moments.

Anime Pilgrimage: The Stage for ‘Love Live!’
Kanda Myojin is also globally famous as a pilgrimage site (seichi) for the hugely popular anime ‘Love Live!’ series. It is depicted in the anime as the jinja where character Nozomi Tojo assists as a miko, making it an essential pilgrimage spot for fans.

Myojin Otoko-zaka: The steep stairs that the members run up for training are one of the most famous ‘seichi’ (sacred spots) among fans.
Collaboration Ema: Official anime ema (votive tablets) are sold within the grounds, and the sight of high-quality illustrations (ita-ema) drawn by fans lining up is a modern spectacle unique to Kanda Myojin.

It also frequently appears in other works set in Akihabara, such as ‘STEINS;GATE,’ and its embracing attitude towards subculture, despite being a traditional jinja, attracts many young people.

Highlights for Your Visit
The shrine grounds are full of highlights, including Japan’s largest stone statue of Daikoku-sama and the resplendent Zuijin-mon gate, gleaming with phoenixes. Additionally, at the ‘EDOCCO’ cultural exchange facility, which opened in 2018, visitors can not only learn about the jinja’s history but also enjoy a stylish cafe and gift shop.

Kanda Myojin, encompassing Edo’s history, Masakado’s mysteries, and the latest anime culture, is a power spot brimming with energy that you absolutely must visit when in Tokyo.

Kunikakasu-jingu (Kunikakasu-jingu) in Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture, is a jinja with a very rare structure: two grand shrines stand side-by-side within a single precinct, adjacent to Hinokuma-jingu (Hinokuma-jingu). Collectively known as Nichizengu (Nichizengu), it has been revered since ancient times as the Ichinomiya (first shrine) of Kii Province. However, the true significance of this jinja lies in the profound depth of its history and the existence of a sacred object (goshintai) comparable to that of Ise Jingu.

Basic Information

Location: 365 Akizuki, Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture
Main kami enshrined: Kunikakasu-no-Okami (Kunikakasu-no-Okami)
Sacred Object (Goshintai): Hiboko-no-Kagami (Hiboko-no-Kagami)
Shrine Rank: Ichinomiya of Kii Province, Kanpei Taisha, Jingu

The most distinctive feature of Kunikakasu-jingu is the legend surrounding its sacred object, the Hiboko-no-Kagami (Hiboko-no-Kagami). In Japanese mythology, when Amaterasu Omikami (the Sun Goddess) hid in Amano-Iwato (the Heavenly Rock Cave), the yaoyorozu-no-kami (eight million gods) created a mirror to lure her out. It is said that the Hiboko-no-Kagami was the first mirror created at that time, followed by the Yata-no-Kagami (Yata-no-Kagami), which is the sacred object of Ise Jingu.

In other words, the mirror enshrined at Kunikakasu-jingu holds an extremely important position: it is considered a “separated mirror” or a “prototype (preliminary version)” of the Yata-no-Kagami, one of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan. For this reason, since ancient times, it has been specially regarded by the Imperial Court as a “jingu second only to Ise” and treated as an exceptional entity, surpassing the rank of “Shoichii” (Senior First Rank), which is the highest divine rank awarded to kami.

Behind the Scenes: Guardians of a “Forbidden Place” No One Has Ever Seen

The sacred object of Kunikakasu-jingu has never been publicly displayed for thousands of years. Furthermore, it is said that even the members of the Kii-shi (Kii clan), who serve as the chief priests (guji), are not permitted to see it. The Kii clan is one of Japan’s oldest lineages, tracing its origins back to the Age of Gods, and has guarded this mirror for generations.

The jinja also endured a difficult history during the Sengoku period (Warring States period) when its shrine land was confiscated during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s conquest of Kii Province, yet the sacred object alone was protected. The current expansive precinct, enveloped in tranquility, is imbued with a unique sense of solemnity and serenity, truly a “sanctuary that has been continuously preserved.”

Anime Pilgrimage Information: Tracing the Roots of “Summer Time Rendering”

The popular anime and manga “Summer Time Rendering” is set in Wakayama City. While Tomogashima is the model for “Hitogashima” (Hitogashima), the island where the story unfolds, this Nichizengu (Hinokuma-jingu and Kunikakasu-jingu) is cited as a model for the “Hito Jinja” appearing in the work, and as one of the image sources for the “ancient Kii faith” that underlies the narrative.

In particular, elements that evoke Wakayama’s unique historical background are scattered throughout, such as the protagonist Shinpei Ajiro’s surname “Ajiro” and the legends surrounding the heroine Ushio Kofune. For anime fans, a visit to this Ichinomiya of Kii Province is an indispensable highlight of a “pilgrimage to sacred sites” to uncover the essence of the work’s eerie and sacred atmosphere.

Points for Visiting

Upon entering the precincts, Hinokuma-jingu is located on the right, and Kunikakasu-jingu on the left. While it might be confusing which one to visit first, it is generally customary to begin your visit at Hinokuma-jingu. The sando (approach path) surrounded by trees offers a cool atmosphere even in summer, serving as a power spot that allows you to forget your daily worries just by taking a step inside.

Like Ise Jingu, Kunikakasu-jingu allows visitors to touch the core of Japanese mythology. When you visit Wakayama, be sure to experience its quiet dignity firsthand.

In Adogawa-cho, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, located in the northwestern part of Lake Biwa, stands an ancient jinja with a difficult-to-read and mystical-sounding name: Harufu jinja (波爾布神社). Although it is a Shikinaisha, a jinja listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho, it is enveloped in a tranquil atmosphere that seems to reject the mundane world. We will delve into the charm of this jinja and the historical mysteries hidden within it.

Basic Information

Name: Harufu jinja (波爾布神社)
Location: 1155 Kamigamo, Adogawa-cho, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture
Main kami: Harufu no kami (波爾布神)
Annual Festival (Reisai): May 4

The Mystery of the Name “Harufu (波爾布)”

What first catches the eye is its unique jinja name. The combination of kanji characters “波爾布” has an archaic feel, similar to Manyogana, but there are various theories about its origin, and it remains shrouded in mystery.

One theory suggests that this area was once a place meaning “Hafu” (burial ground or tomb), or that the name evolved from “Hanyu” (埴生), meaning “clayey soil.” However, what is most intriguing is that the local place name is “Kamigamo” (上鴨).

The “Former Shrine” Theory of Kyoto’s Kamigamo jinja and the Footprints of the Kamo Clan

Many people, upon hearing the place name “Kamigamo” where Harufu jinja is located, will think of Kyoto’s World Heritage site, Kamigamo jinja (Kamo Wakeikazuchi jinja). In fact, this is the greatest historical romance associated with this jinja.

There is a theory that in ancient times, the Kamo clan, a powerful aristocratic family, migrated from the Sea of Japan side, through this region of Takashima, and eventually settled in Kyoto. Harufu jinja is believed to have been one of the bases where the Kamo clan enshrined their ancestral spirits and guardian kami before their move to Kyoto.

In fact, the place name “Shimogamo” also remains around the jinja, suggesting the possibility that the “Kamigamo-Shimogamo” structure of Kyoto already existed as a prototype in this Takashima region. Perhaps the “origin” of Kyoto’s vibrant Kamo culture is hidden within this quiet forest. When you consider this, even the sound of the wind rustling through the trees in the jinja grounds feels like the breath of ancient times.

An “Ancient Presence” Drifts Through the Grounds

The grounds of Harufu jinja are not particularly large. However, as soon as you step inside, you are enveloped in a profound silence that sets it apart from the surrounding rural landscape.

The Honden (main sanctuary) is a Tangible Cultural Property designated by Shiga Prefecture. While it conveys the architectural style of the early Edo period, its stone foundation and the giant trees surrounding it possess a primal strength, reminiscent of the Iwakura (sacred rock) belief from a much earlier time, where kami are said to have descended.

Insider’s Tip for Visitors: A “Sanctuary of Silence” Known to a Select Few

Harufu jinja is not a jinja developed for mass tourism. Therefore, it is rarely crowded with visitors seeking goshuin (red seal stamps). However, this is precisely its greatest charm.

According to local lore, there were times when it was said that damaging the jinja’s forest would bring a curse, and thus its untouched nature and sacred atmosphere have been preserved. Among people with spiritual sensitivities, it is secretly passed down as “one of the best purification spots on the west shore of Lake Biwa.”

In Conclusion

Takashima City in Shiga Prefecture has many famous spots like Shirahige jinja, but if you wish to touch upon the depths of history, by all means, pay a visit to Harufu jinja.

Guided by the mysterious sound of “Harufu,” when you visit the land of Kamigamo, you will find yourself standing at the entrance to a magnificent ancient mystery that could even rewrite the history of Kyoto.

Kaiseizan Daijingu, enshrined in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, is affectionately known as “Tohoku’s Ise Shrine” and is a sacred site that draws the largest number of worshippers in the prefecture for Hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the New Year). However, behind the profound reverence this jinja commands lies the tumultuous era of the Meiji Restoration and the indomitable spirit of its people.

Basic Information
Location: 3-1-38 Kaisei, Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture
Enshrined kami: Amaterasu Omikami, Toyouke no Okami, Emperor Jinmu
Founded: Meiji 9 (1876)
Divine Blessings: National peace and prosperity, business success, protection from evil, good fortune, and more.

The “Miraculous Divided Spirit” Born from a Meiji-era National Project
The greatest feature of Kaiseizan Daijingu is that it enshrines a Go-bunrei (a divided spirit, or branch kami, of a deity) from Ise Jingu. In fact, receiving a Go-bunrei from Ise Jingu was an extremely rare occurrence at the time.
In the early Meiji period, the Asaka wilderness, which included Koriyama, was a desolate land with scarce water. As a spiritual pillar for the pioneers who embarked on the national project of “Asaka Reclamation” to develop this land, a special Go-bunrei was granted from Ise Jingu with the strong backing of the Meiji government. This means that the jinja was not merely a place of worship, but was built with the historical background of being a “beacon of hope” symbolizing Japan’s modernization.

Legends and Episodes: One of Japan’s Oldest Somei Yoshino Cherry Trees
Along with Kaiseizan Park, which extends next to the jinja, this area is also known as a famous spot for cherry blossoms. In fact, the Somei Yoshino cherry trees planted here in Meiji 11 (1878) by the pioneers are said to be among the oldest Somei Yoshino cherry trees in Japan.
At that time, the pioneers, enduring harsh labor, planted saplings, dreaming of the day this land would be covered in full bloom. The beautiful rows of cherry trees we see today are the materialized “prayers for the future” of those people.

Mystery and Backstory: A Deep Connection with Ise Jingu
The shrine buildings (shaden) of Kaiseizan Daijingu are built in the same “Shinmei-zukuri” architectural style as Ise Jingu. Furthermore, during Ise Jingu’s “Shikinen Sengu” (periodic rebuilding ceremony) which occurs once every 20 years, Kaiseizan Daijingu sometimes receives old timber that was actually used at Ise Jingu, which is then used for repairing its own shrine buildings or constructing torii gates.
If you happen to touch a torii gate or a shrine building during your visit, it might be wood that once protected the kami in Ise. It is thanks to this profound connection that you can experience the atmosphere of Ise firsthand, even while in Tohoku.

Anime Pilgrimage Information: “Gakuen Babysitters”
Kaiseizan Daijingu and its surrounding area (Kaiseizan Park) are known as one of the models for the setting of the popular anime “Gakuen Babysitters.” Scenes in the anime featuring park landscapes and evoking the solemn atmosphere of the jinja have made it a beloved “pilgrimage site” among fans. Especially during cherry blossom season, many fans visit, seeking the beautiful scenery resembling scenes from the anime.

Key Highlights for Your Visit
Within the shrine grounds, you will also find Kaiseizan Tenmangu, which enshrines the contributors to the Asaka Reclamation Project, and Inari Jinja for business prosperity. After visiting the main hall, be sure to explore the surrounding subsidiary shrines (sessha and massha). You will surely feel the sweat of the pioneers and the power of the kami who supported them.
When you visit “Tohoku’s Ise Shrine,” which has watched over the development of Koriyama, knowing its history will make each step toward the hall of worship (haiden) even more profound.

Narumi Jinja is a shrine located in Midori Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. Known affectionately by locals as “Narimi-san,” it is, in fact, a highly prestigious ancient shrine with a deep connection to Atsuta Jingu and a history spanning over 1300 years. This article will introduce some of the mysteries hidden within this shrine and some lesser-known backstories.

Basic Information
Location: 85 Otogoyama, Narumi-cho, Midori Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture
Enshrined kami: Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, Miyazu Hime no Mikoto, Takeinadane no Mikoto
Founded: Shucho Gannen (686 AD)
Access: Approximately 10 minutes walk from Narumi Station on the Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line

—

The Mystery of the Kusanagi-no-Mitsurugi’s Return and the Birth of Narumi Jinja
The founding of Narumi Jinja is deeply intertwined with one of the greatest mysteries in Japanese mythology: the “Theft of the Kusanagi-no-Mitsurugi.”

During the reign of Emperor Tenji, the Kusanagi-no-Mitsurugi was stolen from Atsuta Jingu by Dogyo, a monk from Silla (an ancient Korean kingdom). The sacred sword was eventually returned safely to Atsuta. The following year, Shucho Gannen (686 AD), Narumi Jinja was founded to commemorate the sacred sword’s re-enshrinement in Atsuta and to serve as its “guardian to the east.”

For this reason, Narumi Jinja has long been referred to as “Atsuta’s inner sanctuary” or “Atsuta of the East (Narumi no Omiya).” It is this historical background that explains why Narumi Jinja, like Atsuta Jingu, enshrines Yamato Takeru no Mikoto as its main kami.

Did It Disappear from Narumi Castle Ruins? The Legend of the “Moving Shrine”
While Narumi Jinja is currently located on “Otogoyama,” it was not originally here when it was founded. It is said that the shrine was initially located where the “Narumi Castle Ruins (Castle Ruins Park)” stands today.

However, during the Oei era (1394-1428), when Yasuhara Munenori, a vassal of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, constructed Narumi Castle, the shrine was relocated to its present site. There is a backstory to this relocation; people at the time were reportedly fearful, wondering “What is this, moving the kami?” However, the relocation ultimately led to the shrine taking on the role of a guardian deity for the castle. Even today, Tenjinsha is enshrined at the former site, Narumi Castle Ruins, allowing visitors to feel the remnants of the former sacred grounds.

The Memory of “Narumigata” Sung in the Manyoshu
While the area around the shrine is now a residential neighborhood, in ancient times, the sea extended very close to the shrine. The Manyoshu, an ancient anthology of Japanese poetry, contains a poem: “Cranes cry as they fly over Sakurada, it must be low tide, as I gaze upon Narumigata.”

Within the grounds of Narumi Jinja, there stands a monument with this poem, commemorating the scenery of the Manyo era. When you visit the shrine, imagining the tidal flats that once stretched out before it, it feels as if the scene from 1000 years ago comes to life.

Thrilling! The Backstory of “Omotegata”
The “Omanto” festival, held during Narumi Jinja’s annual grand festival, is a spirited event where elaborately decorated floats are paraded on horseback. This festival also serves as proof of Narumi’s past prosperity as a vital post town on the Tokaido road.

In fact, the “Narumi Omotegata” people who participate in this festival have a very strong sense of pride and tradition. It is said that there used to be fierce rivalry between the central part of the post town (Omotegata) and other areas, and that passion is still carried on in today’s festival.

Hidden Power Spot: “Daruma-zuka”
In a corner of the shrine grounds, there is a somewhat unusual “Daruma-zuka” (Daruma mound). This was created to memorialize Daruma dolls that have completed their purpose. It is a unique spot, befitting Narumi’s history as a prosperous post town for business. It is said to be a powerful energy spot, known to those in the know, where Daruma dolls, imbued with many people’s wishes, gather.

—

Narumi Jinja is a sacred site that transcends the role of a mere local ujigami (guardian deity) shrine, born with the grand mission of protecting the Kusanagi-no-Mitsurugi, one of the Three Sacred Treasures. When you visit Atsuta Jingu, why not extend your journey to Narumi Jinja, its “guardian to the east,” and experience its profound history?

Suiten-gu is a jinja located in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, on the banks of the Chikugo River. This is the grand head jinja for all Suiten-gu shrines across Japan, and even as far as Hawaii. The Suiten-gu in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, also originated when the Arima clan, lords of the Kurume Domain, enshrined a branch of the kami at their residence during the Edo period. It stands as the venerable pinnacle of “kami of water.”

The Legend of ‘Amagozen’ Born from the Tragedy of Dannoura

The history of Suiten-gu begins with the tragic episode of the Battle of Dannoura in 1185.

When the Taira clan met its demise, the child Emperor Antoku, just 8 years old, was embraced by his grandmother, Ni-i no Ama, and cast himself into the sea with the words, “Even beneath the waves, there is a capital.”

At that time, a court lady named Azechi no Tsubone Ise survived and fled to the banks of the Chikugo River. She built a small shrine to enshrine the spirits of Emperor Antoku and the Taira clan, which is said to be the origin of Suiten-gu. She later changed her name to Chiyo and was revered by the local people for performing incantations and prayers (kaji kito). Thus, the jinja was initially called “Amagozen Jinja.” Even today, locals affectionately refer to it as “Suitengu-san.”

Mystery: The Vow of ‘Kusenbo,’ Who Commanded Nine Thousand Kappa

Kurume Suiten-gu preserves a very unique legend about kappa.

Once, nine thousand kappa led by “Kusenbo” lived in the Kuma River in Kumamoto. However, their mischief became too much, and they were expelled by Kato Kiyomasa.

Losing their home, the kappa vowed to Lord Arima, the lord of Kurume Domain, “never to cause trouble again,” and were permitted to live in the Chikugo River. Since then, it is said that the kappa became messengers (shinshi) of Suiten-gu and began protecting people from water-related disasters.

Within the shrine grounds, you’ll find charming kappa stone statues, including a “Nade Kappa” (stroking kappa) which is said to bring blessings if you caress it. Additionally, a “Kappa Mask” is available as a sacred souvenir. It is believed that displaying this mask in the kitchen will ward off fire and water calamities.

The ‘Love Story’ and ‘Loyalty’ Hidden in the Camellia Crest

The sacred crest (goshinmon) of Suiten-gu is the camellia (tsubaki). It is rare for a jinja to have a camellia as its crest, but there are two theories explaining this.

One theory relates to the tragic love story between Emperor Antoku and a maiden named Tamae-hime. The other theory is that the founder, Ise (Chiyo), devoted herself to the Taira clan and loved the camellia, which blooms nobly with evergreen leaves even in winter.

Even today, many camellia trees are planted on the shrine grounds, showcasing their beautiful appearance as the “Camellia Jinja” during their blooming season.

Pilgrimage Information: Immerse Yourself in the World of the Anime ‘The Heike Story’

Kurume Suiten-gu can be considered a very important spiritual pilgrimage site for fans of the anime ‘The Heike Story,’ which aired in 2022.

The Battle of Dannoura depicted in the anime’s climax, and the final moments of Emperor Antoku and Kenreimon-in (Tokuko). This grand head jinja is an indispensable place for understanding where their souls ultimately arrived and how they are enshrined.

Visitors will be able to feel firsthand how the “prayers” of the Taira clan, as depicted in the anime, are still carefully preserved today on the banks of the Chikugo River.

Behind the Scenes: Bakumatsu Loyalist ‘Maki Izuminokami’ and Suiten-gu

In fact, Maki Izuminokami, known as a leader of the Sonno Joi (Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians) faction during the Bakumatsu period, was the 22nd chief priest (guji) of this Suiten-gu.

He became one of the spiritual pillars of the Meiji Restoration but was defeated in the Kinmon Incident and committed suicide on Mount Tennozan. Within the shrine grounds, there is also the “Maki Jinja,” dedicated to him, making it a spot for history enthusiasts to reflect on the turmoil of the Bakumatsu era.

Suiten-gu stands with the magnificent flow of the Chikugo River behind it. There, the sorrow of the Taira clan, the gratitude of the kappa, and the passion of the Bakumatsu period still quietly breathe.

In Fujii-dera City, Osaka Prefecture, right in the heart of the Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group, a UNESCO World Heritage site, there exists a jinja with a truly unique landscape. This is Sawada Hachiman jinja (Sawada Hachiman Shrine). While it appears at first glance to be a quiet local ujigami (guardian kami) shrine, it hides a curious sight that would surprise even railway enthusiasts, and a great mystery where ancient kings sleep.

Basic Information

Location: 1-15-1 Sawada, Fujii-dera City, Osaka Prefecture
Enshrined kami: Homutawake no Mikoto (Emperor Ojin)
Access: Approximately a 10-minute walk from Hajinosato Station on the Kintetsu Minami Osaka Line.

A Train Runs Through the Sando? A Jinja with a Level Crossing, Rare Even Nationwide

The first thing that surprises visitors to Sawada Hachiman jinja is the structure of its sando (approach path). Right in the middle of the sando, which you walk after passing through the torii gate and heading towards the haiden (worship hall), the tracks of the Kintetsu Minami Osaka Line boldly cross.

There is a level crossing (Sawada No. 1 Level Crossing) within the sando, and when the barrier goes down, worshippers must wait for the train to pass. This scene, where a train appears to cut through the sacred grounds, has become a famous photography spot among railway enthusiasts and photography lovers. Why did it turn out this way? It is said that when the railway was laid during the Meiji era, the route passing through the jinja’s precincts was the shortest. However, it is also a mysterious spot that makes one feel the broad-mindedness of the people of that time who allowed a train to cross the jinja’s sando, and the passage of eras.

The Astonishing Fact: The Jinja Itself Sits Atop a Kofun (Ancient Burial Mound)

The greatest characteristic of Sawada Hachiman jinja is its location. In fact, this jinja is built on the tumulus (burial mound) of a kofun called “Sawada Hachimanyama Kofun.”

This kofun is believed to be a circular kofun about 35 meters in diameter (or possibly a square kofun), and is considered one of the baicho (smaller kofun accompanying a larger kofun) located right next to the massive “Nakatsuyama Kofun.”

The stairs you climb to reach the haiden are, in fact, the slope of the kofun itself. It is a truly mysterious and awe-inspiring structure, knowing that an ancient dignitary might be sleeping beneath our feet as we offer our prayers to the kami.

Legends and Untold Stories: The Vanished ‘Giant Pine’ and Local Guardianship

There is a legend that a giant pine tree once stood tall within the jinja’s precincts, large enough to serve as a landmark from afar. That pine was said to have served as a guidepost for ships sailing nearby and for travelers, but unfortunately, it no longer remains today.

Furthermore, this area is close to the home base of the ancient influential Hani clan, and the spirit of those involved in kofun construction still permeates the soil. Sawada Hachiman jinja might be acting as a “lid,” connecting those ancient memories to the present day.

Key Points for Your Visit

The jinja grounds are usually very quiet, but the sound of Kintetsu trains passing echoes every few minutes. The moment when “sacred tranquility” and “modern railway” intersect creates a unique atmosphere that can only be experienced here.

It is an excellent place to stop by during your tour of the World Heritage kofun, but please be extremely careful when crossing the level crossing. Why not feel the flow of time, from ancient to modern, in this wondrous space where kami and trains coexist?

Konan City, Shiga Prefecture, is home to Ishibe-juku, a post town that once thrived as a stop along the historic Tokaido Road. In this historic town stands Yoshihime Jinja, a shrine that has been cherished by locals for centuries and is steeped in mystical legends.

This time, we delve into the mystery of the “paired shrines” hidden within Yoshihime Jinja and uncover its fascinating historical background.

Basic Information about Yoshihime Jinja
Yoshihime Jinja is located at 2-4-43 Ishibe Higashi, Konan City, Shiga Prefecture. The enshrined deity is Yoshihime-no-Mikoto. The shrine holds the rank of a Shikinaisha, meaning it was listed in the Engishiki, an ancient record of shrines. To reach the shrine, it is approximately a 20-minute walk from Ishibe Station on the JR Kusatsu Line, or about a 15-minute drive from the Ritto Interchange on the Meishin Expressway.

1. Do a “Male Deity” and “Female Deity” Reside Separately? The Mystery of Two Paired Shrines

Central to the story of Yoshihime Jinja is the presence of Yoshimiko Jinja, located approximately one kilometer away. Interestingly, Yoshihime Jinja enshrines a female kami, Yoshihime-no-Mikoto, while Yoshimiko Jinja enshrines a male kami, Yoshimiko-no-Mikoto. These two shrines are regarded as a pair, like a married couple or “paired shrines.” While there are various theories as to why they are enshrined in separate locations rather than within a single precinct, local lore suggests they have protected the town of Ishibe from both sides since ancient times. It is a local belief that visiting both shrines together can enhance blessings for matchmaking and marital harmony.

2. The Legendary Isobesshi Clan and the Shadow of Migrants

The founding of Yoshihime Jinja is said to be remarkably ancient, with its origins tracing back to the reign of Emperor Suinin, a period predating the Kofun era. It is believed to have begun when the Isobesshi clan, an ancient powerful family based in this region, enshrined their ancestral kami. What makes this particularly intriguing is the theory that the Isobesshi clan was a group of migrant artisans. In the vicinity of Yoshihime Jinja, traces of advanced stonemasonry and metalworking have been found. This mystery—that the female kami enshrined here was not merely a deity of mountains or water, but a symbol of a clan possessing ancient, cutting-edge technology—captivates the minds of history enthusiasts.

3. The “Tranquil Forest” Away from the Post Town’s Bustle and Untold Stories

Yoshihime Jinja is situated at the eastern edge of Ishibe-juku, the former post town on the Tokaido. During the Edo period, travelers would pass by this shrine, experiencing the earnest and steady atmosphere of the post town, a spirit often symbolized by the phrase “Ishibe Kinkichi.” An interesting anecdote about this shrine reveals records indicating that the owners of the tea houses and inns along the old road often prayed more fervently for the “safety of travelers” than for their own business prosperity. The shrine’s current serene ambiance, almost as if it resists modern commercialization, may be due to the enduring spirit of “quietly watching over travelers” that still permeates its grounds.

4. The Impressive Ishibe Taiko and the Enthusiasm of the Rituals

While typically a tranquil place, Yoshihime Jinja transforms completely during its annual festival, the Ishibe Matsuri, held every May. The sight of omikoshi, portable shrines, emerging from both Yoshihime Jinja and Yoshimiko Jinja and parading through the town is truly spectacular. The powerful sound of the Ishibe Taiko drums, specifically, has been passed down through generations in this area and is so dynamic it seems to awaken a fierce aspect of the female kami. It is believed that only on this festival day do the male and female kami, who usually reside in separate shrines, connect their spirits, making it the most sacred moment for the local community.

5. Highlights: Shrine Buildings and Komainu That Tell History

Upon entering the shrine grounds, visitors are first greeted by a magnificent two-storied gate and moss-covered komainu, or guardian dogs. The main shrine building of Yoshihime Jinja, while not elaborately decorated, features a robust construction that highlights the natural texture of its wood, and it is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property by Shiga Prefecture. Especially noteworthy are the intricate carvings found in the details of the worship hall, showcasing a precision that evokes the ancient craftsmanship of the Isobesshi clan.

Advice for Visitors
When you visit Yoshihime Jinja, we highly recommend combining your visit with Yoshimiko Jinja. By walking through the old streets of Ishibe-juku and following the path that connects these two shrines, you can gain a deeper sense of the enduring history that permeates this land. It’s a journey through the history of the Tokaido, the enigma of an ancient powerful clan, and a tale woven by male and female kami. When you find yourself in Konan City, Shiga Prefecture, be sure to step into the tranquil forest of Yoshihime Jinja.
